TOTALLY agree! what a great ending, esp. w/the way they filmed it as though with a surveillance camera mounted up in the corner of the room... |

Say what you will, but I love "Jerry Maguire".
When Tom Cruise tells Renee Zellweger, "You complete me" -- well, that's just amazing and beautiful and I could only hope for something like that one day. I hope it doesn't just happen in the movies. |

the scene in "better luck tomorrow" after the party, when they're all in the car and everyone is silent & freaked out, except for virgil sitting in the back seat talking nonstop. his performance in this scene just floored me...

A Place to Stand

a great topic. i could yak up a storm with this one.
where would i begin? let's start with charlie chaplin. the dance of the dinner rolls in the gold rush. the scene in modern times where he gets caught up in the machine's gears. in the great dictator, the jewish barber shaves his customer in perfect rhythm to "hungarian dance" as it plays on the radio. the opening shot of a touch of evil. gloria swanson's closing shot in sunset boulevard: "i'm ready for my closeup.." the card game scene in the sting. the crop dusting scene in north by northwest. absolutely perfect . the coen brothers always have (at least) one scene in each of their movies that just knocks me out. one of my favorites is the scene in miller's crossing where albert finney is sitting upstairs in his bed, smoking a cigar, reading the paper, while "danny boy" plays on the phonograph. rival gangsters break in downstairs and begin walking up the stairs. he very calmly puts out his cigar, climbs under the bed...and proceeds to cut all of them (including the ones trying to flee in their car) to smithereens....while "danny boy" still plays on. okay, two more. the "tequila" biker bar scene in pee-wee's big adventure; the "puttin' on the ritz" scene in young frankenstein. i'll be back for more. |

Well, the final sequence of Chaplin's City Lights, which is absolutely perfect, that I posted in the "movies that made you cry" thread.
And if I had to vote for the best artist of the 20th century, it'd be Chaplin. |

"Perfection" for me is the scene in Dead Poets Society when Mr. Keating walks into the classroom after being fired (because he was blamed for Neil's suicide). When students start standing on their desks and repeat, "Oh Captain, my Captain" in order to support him, I lose it. Every time.
